Expressing profound grief over the gangrape of a photojournalist in the financial capital, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday said the court should pronounce an immediate and harsh verdict in this case so that it acts as a deterrent.
"I was in Aurangabad, I am coming from there. But I have been in touch with my officials and the Maharashtra Home Minister after hearing about this incident. Everybody wants this case to reach its logical conclusion. First of all, we would like that the court pronounces its verdict and strict punishment is given to the accused," he told media here today.
Chavan also said that there is a need to increase the police forces to take care of issues like women security, naxal attacks and terrorism.
He also emphasized that there is a need to better train the men in uniform.
The incident took place last evening in Lower Parel area where the 23-year-old woman had gone for an assignment.
She was working with an English Magazine as an intern. According to police, the men tied up the friend who was accompanying her and raped the woman.
The victim, who was admitted to Jaslok Hospital, had sustained multiple internal injuries. She is stated to be in a stable condition now.
The Centre has sought a detailed report on the gangrape incident.
Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today said that he has spoken to the Commissioner of Police on the gangrape incident in Mumbai urging for stringent action.
