A Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) protest turned violent after cadres of the left party clashed with the police in Kolkata on Thursday.

The protest, which was against the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, saw the agitators demand employment for all and a reduction in the price hike that the city has been witnessing in recent months.

The police, after warning the crowd to disperse, lathi-charged the protestors, who fled at the onslaught.

Further details are awaited.
