Following revelations about migrant labourers working under inhuman conditions at the construction sites of 2022 World Cup facilities in Qatar, FIFA has decided to monitor the treatment meted out to workers closely.
Pay slips of workers constructing the Al Wakrah stadium in Qatar showed that they earned as little as 4.90 pounds a day and worked up to 30 days a month. FIFA decided to look into the matter itself after the wages and the working conditions were criticized severely by a series of British politicians as deplorable, The Guardian reported.
A FIFA spokesperson said that although Qatar's workers' welfare reforms form a significant step in the right direction yet they have urged the authorities to address any unacceptable conditions for migrant workers in the country and will monitor the implementation of those reforms.
The organization remarked that it wants to use the hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a catalyst for positive social change.
