World number one Rory Mcllroy's preparation for the US Open suffered a huge blow after he missed the cut for the third straight year at the Irish Open at Royal County Down.
Mcllroy was unable to undo the damage of his opening 80 as a 71 made him miss the cut.
Battling in tough Royal County Down conditions, Mcllroy's double bogey at 15 ended his hopes.
Dejected Mcllroy said that he left himself too much to do from yesterday, adding that he played the solid round of golf but that was not enough, the BBC reported.
British trio Richie Ramsay, Chris Wood and Tyrrell Hatton are among a six-strong leading group on three under with Padraig Harrington a shot behind.
He insisted that he was trying as hard as he could but just couldn't get a good run of holes going.
He said that the support out there was phenomenal and it was the third year in a row they are not going to see him play at the weekend, adding that he was more disappointed for them and honestly looking forward to two weeks off before the US Open.
