At least 12 people were killed on Friday in an explosion in Egypt's capital Cairo, officials said.

A firebomb hurled at a restaurant killed 12 people and injured six others in Cairo, Al-Arabia quoted Egyptian security officials as saying.

The attacker was an employee who was fired from the restaurant in Agouza area of the capital, an official said.

Extremist militants have claimed a number of bombing and shooting attacks in Egypt, mostly against members of the security forces since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim brotherhood in 2013.
