At least 14 people were killed and four were reported missing on Sunday as typhoon Soudelor lashed eastern China's Zhejiang province, authorities said.

After hitting Taiwan earlier Saturday, Soudelor made landfall in China later at night in Fujian province and from there it moved to Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces, Xinhua news agency reported.

The victims were either washed away by floods or buried under collapsed houses.

The typhoon brought heavy downpour to the regions where precipitation in some counties reached 700 mm, a record in over 100 years.

The typhoon has affected 1.58 million people and forced 188,400 to evacuate Zhejiang. It also toppled down 223 houses, damaged 272 roads and 43,600 hectares of crops, inflicting a direct economic loss of 4 billion yuan ($644 million).

Rescue teams were dispatched the hard-hit regions.

Airports were closed in the affected provinces, with over 500 flights cancelled. Six expressways were closed, and 191 high-speed trains were also suspended.

Soudelor killed six people in Taiwan and injured over 100.
