Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Monday distributed free laptops to students in Ghaziabad and unveiled new projects amid residents' protests seeking a CBI probe into the recent murder of a seven-member family.
The chief minister distributed the laptops to 50 students as part of his Samajwadi Party election pledge. Other over 8,000 computers would be given by the administration, an official said.
The first laptop recipient was Anjali Singh Bist.
The official said 5,598 laptops would be distributed to Ghaziabad students while 2,476 laptops will be given to students in Gautam Budh Nagar.
The chief minister also launched 37 Ghaziabad Development Authority projects worth Rs.3,750 crore.
When the chief minister was addressing the audience at Kamla Nehru Nagar, a group of protesters gathered outside the venue and sought a federal probe into the killing of seven members of a family in the city.
Some of the protesters were also detained, police said.
Businessman Satish Goel, 62, his wife Manju, 60, son Sachin, 40, daughter-in-law Rekha, 38, and three grandchildren - Medha, 13, Honey, 11, and Aman, 10 - were murdered in Nai Basti area May 21.
