China's capital Beijing issued an orange alert for continuous heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

According to the meteorological department, the centre and southern part of the city received 70 mm of rainfall in six hours, Xinhua news agency reported.

Heavy showers are expected to last until Wednesday night and may exceed 100 mm.

The capital issued a storm blue alert on Tuesday morning and later raised it to orange.

China follows a four-tier colour-coded system for severe weather with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue, respectively.
