A police officer died following an early morning assault near a nightclub in Liverpool city centre Friday, media reported. Two of his colleagues were injured in the attack.
Merseyside Police confirmed that an off-duty police officer, Neil Doyle, 36, died as a result of his injuries following the incident.
A police spokesman said both the injured officers had been discharged from hospital, where one had been treated for a fractured cheekbone and the other "a less serious facial injury".
Officers were called to the scene, in Colquitt Street near the Aloha club, at around 3.15 a.m. to reports of an assault, according to BBC.
Doyle worked at the Eaton Road police station in West Derby. Police are treating the attack as murder. The scene has been cordoned off while forensic examinations take place, local media reports.
