The BSF on Wednesday arrested a gold smuggler and seized 45 gold biscuits worth Rs 1.49 crore from him in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, an official said.
Acting on a tip, Border Security Force troopers of Tarali border outpost laid an ambush and arrested the man near the India-Bangladesh border.
He was identified as Ahad Sardar, 60. The 45 gold biscuits weighing around 5.25 kg were seized from him, Deputy Inspector General R.P.S. Jaswal said in a press release.
"Sardar was handed over to the Customs department along with the seized gold biscuits.
The South Bengal frontier of the BSF has seized a total of 18.38 kg of gold, worth around Rs 5.23 crore, and arrested seven gold smugglers this year.
