A 26-year-old police constable shot himself dead in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, police said.

Ravikant shot himself with his service rifle at the government quarters in Gonda town, some 120 km from here, Gonda Superintendent of Police R.P.S. Yadav told IANS.

Ravikant's friends say he had been distressed for some days as he was not able to get leave or a day off from work. No suicide note was found.

Yadav said a probe had been ordered into the incident. "It is a big tragedy. We are trying to ascertain the reason behind the constable taking such a step," the officer said.
