Jharkhand has witnessed 36.13 per cent rise in corruption cases while crimes against women have dipped slightly, according to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB).
As per the NCRB data released on Thursday, 76 corruption related cases were registered in 2015, which increased to 119 in 2016. Officials have termed the rise in cases as an achievement of the state government in tackling corruption.
"The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) dealing with corruption cases has become more active. The ACB officials based on the corruption input, trap corrupt government staff, including police officials and Deputy Collectors. In 2017 more government officials were caught," a senior state government official said.
The overall crime against women has declined slightly. In 2015, crimes against women stood at 6,568, which declined to 5,453 in 2016. Economic offences declined from 3,566 in 2015 to 3,119 in 2016.
Crimes against children and elderly have increased. As per the data, only six cases of crimes against the elderly were registered in 2015, which increased to 56 in 2016. Crimes against children increased from 124 in 2015 to 140 in 2016.
Abduction cases declined from 1,402 in 2015 to 1,309 in 2016. Crimes against Scheduled Tribes showed an increase -- from 266 in 2015 to 280 in 2016.
"The heinous crime rate has declined in Jharkhand. Crimes against children are a cause of concern. The awareness level has increased and this is the reason the elderly are now registering the crimes in police stations," a police official said.
