A young Dalit couple, whose proposed marriage was opposed by their families, allegedly committed suicide in Haryana's Jind district, 170 km from here, police said Wednesday.
The bodies of Surender, 21, and Reena, 18, were found hanging in the young man's hair-dresser's shop in Surbura village near Uchana town.
Police officials said that the couple intended to get married, and their families had opposed their union.
"They must have taken this step (of committing suicide) as Reena was under duress to accept someone else in marriage," a police official said.
Reena's mother told the police that she left the house early Wednesday had gone missing for a few hours.
The families came to know about the suicide when Surender's brother went to open the shop.
