An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Police allegedly committed suicide on Thursday by jumping before a metro train at the Jahangirpuri station in north Delhi, police said.

The incident occurred at 11.58 a.m. when ASI Ajay Kumar (45), who was posted with the communications unit of Delhi Police, jumped before the train. A CCTV footage also showed Kumar waiting for the train at the platform.

"He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. No suicide note was recovered from Kumar's possession. A probe is on to establish why took the extreme step," Deputy Commissioner of Police (metro) Mohammed Ali said.

A native of Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district, Kumar was on medical leave from February 2 to March 4. He later extended his leave till April 4 and was supposed to join duty on Thursday.

"Preliminary probe revealed that Kumar was suffering from depression for the past few months. He was supposed to join office today," said Anil Mittal, Additional PRO of Delhi Police.

Kumar joined Delhi Police as a constable in 1994. He later got promoted as Head Constable in 2000 before becoming an ASI in 2015. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
