Delhi mulling a dozen language academies

The Delhi government is mulling setting up academies of around a dozen languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Kashmiri and Tamil, in the city.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday directed Secretary (Art, Culture and Language) V. Abrraham to draft a proposal in this regards.

In a letter, Sisodia, who also holds the portfolio of Art, Culture and Language, said people from all parts of India live and work in Delhi, therefore, there was a need to set up more language academies to cater to the diverse and cosmopolitan population of the national capital.

"I have found that language academies play an important role in promoting the languages of different parts of the country... they also promote the culture and tradition of different regions of the country," Sisodia said.

"Secretary (Art, Culture and Language) is hereby directed to prepare a proposal for the formation of Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Odia, Assamese, Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari, Kashmiri and Marwadi academies," Sisodia directed.

Sisodia, in his budget speech earlier this year, had mentioned that multiple academies would be set up in Delhi during 2017-18.
