A student of the private Devsanskriti University here has set a new record for Shirshasana, doing the yoga headstand for more than 90 minutes, the varsity claimed on Tuesday.

According to Pro Vice Chancellor Chinmay Pandya, this feat will be sent to the Guiness and the Limca Book of Records.

Aditya Prakash Singh, a final year BSc student at the varsity, can regularly perform the yogic posture continuously for more than 80 minutes, said a statement. According to the Guinness World Records, the current record of 61 minutes was set by Ivar Stanley, an advertising professional settled in Dubai, earlier this year.

Singh, who hails from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur and joined the varsity in 2013, can also perform other complicated asans like 'Karnapeedasana', 'Mayurasana', 'Garbhasana' etc. and credits his skill to his mentor, the varsity's chancellor Pranav Pandya.

The achievement coincides with the forthcoming International Festival of Yoga and spirituality, being organised by the varsity from October 1 to 6, which will be the fifth edition of the event.

The varsity, established in 2002, is known for its quality yoga research and teaching, and its students are achieving more and more perfection in performing difficult yoga asanas. On World Yoga Day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat appointed its student Dilpreet Kaur as the state's brand ambassador for yoga.
