For raconteur Bakula Nayak, postcards, old bills and legal papers, constitute a window to the history and a canvas for the present. An exhibition of these vintage objects will open at the India International Centre (IIC) here on Wednesday.
The exhibition is titled "Intimate Strangers", and contains paintings, paper sculptures, vintage photographs, letters, journals, and other paper ephemera dating from the early 1900s to the late 1960s.
"Collecting vintage paper is a passion I have had for several decades," Nayak said in a statement.
"I love to imagine their life stories and of the people who owned them. I started drawing on them to give them a life outside of the cupboards they were stored in," she added.
Nayak said that the vintage papers represent something that was once living and loved, and this is what has become part of her reality.
"My paintings are an attempt to give new life to these forgotten pieces of beauty. Aged gorgeously, they form the perfect canvas to interpret the reality of my world... my love for all things vintage reflects my insane desire for romance, aesthetics, poetics and seduction in everything."
The exhibition is an intimate journey of unravelling the lives of strangers. It will seek to tell stories that meet at the juncture of past and present.
It will conclude on August 28.
