Infosys Foundation, IT major Infosys' philanthropic arm, has signed a Rs 5 crore MoU with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru to enhance research related to infectious diseases, the company said on Monday.

The Memorandum of Understanding would help improve the infrastructure and broaden research activities at the Centre for Infectious Disease Research at the IISc, an official statement from the company said.

"With this MoU, Infosys Foundation aims to set milestones in the area of research of infectious diseases," Chairperson of Infosys Foundation Sudha Murthy said in the statement.

"We will focus on motivating researchers to perform cutting-edge research, as well as train them to raise awareness about infectious diseases," Murthy added.

"The grant of Rs 5 crore will be used towards research, training and creating awareness about infectious diseases, benefiting 25 faculty members and 250 students at IISc," the company said.

The association will allow an interdisciplinary approach, with focus on research about infectious diseases, leading to the development of new drug targets, drug delivery systems and novel diagnostic tools, it added.

Founded in 1909, Bengaluru-based IISc is a public university for research and higher education in science and engineering disciplines.
