Home-grown global software major Infosys Ltd was on Tuesday recognised as IT ratna of Karnataka by the state government and the state-run Software Technology Parks of India (STPI).

"Infosys has been recognised as the IT ratna of Karnataka for being the highest exporter (Rs.62,441 crore/$9.5 billion) and the largest employer (about 2 lakh employees), state IT Minister Priyank Kharge told reporters at an IT event here.

Lauding the STPI for promoting the growth of the IT sector in Bengaluru and across the state, he said IT exports from STPI units across the country were Rs 3 lakh crore, including 40 per cent from Karnataka, in 2015-16.

"STPI units in tier-two cities like Mangaluru, Hubballi and Mysuru across the state contributed to IT exports valued at Rs.4,000 crore," said Kharge at an export awards function at the BengaluruITE.biz, the state's flagship tech event.

In all, 22 IT, IT-enabled services and electronic hardware firms under eight categories were awarded for their top performance and outstanding contribution to the growth of the industry spanning exports, employment and domain expertise.

An expert panel with members from the central and state governments, industry and academia selected the companies for the awards after scrutinising their performance on various parameters.

In addition, 10 global tech firms, including Accenture, Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, Oracle and TCS were recognised as 'IT Pride of Karnataka' for their export performance and contribution to the growth of the industry in the state.
