SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Monday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making tall and false promises and lying to the country.
Addressing an election rally in his parliamentary constituency Mainpuri, which goes for bypolls Sep 13, the Samajwadi Party (SP) chief said the central government had failed to deliver on the tall promises made during the Lok Sabha campaign.
He also questioned the foreign policy of the union government.
"Always note, the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and Narendra Modi are experts in making tall but false promises and lying," he told the gathering.
In the past, Mulayam Singh thrice represented Mainpuri as its MP. He also won the 2014 Lok Sabha poll from here but vacated it while holding onto Azamgarh -- another seat from where he was declared victorious in the April-May elections.
Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, his grand nephew, is now the party candidate from Mainpuri, considered a family bastion of the Yadavs.
Mulayam Singh also alleged that the BJP was trying to disturb communal harmony in the state but added that the SP will never let the "nefarious designs" of their leaders succeed.
"SP has always stood against communal forces and here too, we will fight them with all our might," he added.
In the meeting, he questioned and trashed the achievements of the Modi government in the first 100 days of power.
Meanwhile, in a sharp rebuke to the utterances of the state's former chief minister, the state BJP said that before questioning the 100 days of BJP rule, Mulayam Singh should first account for the 900 days of SP government in Uttar Pradesh.
"Before pointing fingers at anyone, Mulayam Singh and his chief minister son Akhilesh Yadav are better advised to look into the mess they are presiding over, be it on power, roads, law and order, communal harmony or any other front," state BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said.
