Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid his tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram, who died on this date in 1986, hailing him as a champion of the deprived masses.

"Tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his Punya Tithi. We will always remember his contribution towards empowerment of the poor and marginalised," Modi tweeted.

Known popularly as Babuji, Babu Jagjivan Ram was a Congress leader and the Labour Minister in the first cabinet. He later became a Deputy Prime Minister in 1977.
