Questioning the "callous" attitude of the police in West Bengal, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson, Mamta Sharma, Tuesday flayed the Mamata Banerjee-led state government for not paying heed to the panel's recommendations.
An NCW team, led by Sharma, is in the state to meet victims and probe several incidents of gang rape here, including that of the 20-year-old tribal woman who was violated by several men allegedly at the behest of a kangaroo court in Birbhum district.
"It is a matter of regret that this government never bothers to pay any heed to our recommendations. The Chief Minister should be more sensitive in matters involving crimes against women," Sharma said.
She added that the panel was still awaiting Action Taken Reports (ATRs) sought from the Banerjee government regarding incidents of crimes against women.
She also expressed unhappiness over the action taken by the Banerjee government in some recent such cases and accused the police of colluding with the perpetrators of the crimes.
"We are not at all satisfied with the measures taken by the state government. The attitude of police is very callous. In certain cases, they even try to broker a compromise between the offenders and the victim's family," she said.
"It is the job of the police to provide justice to the victim, unfortunately it seldom happens," she added.
The NCW had suo motu taken cognisance of the Birbhum case and sought an ATR.
