Rain halted the first cricket World Cup quarter-final with Sri Lanka batting on 127/9 in 36.2 overs against South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here on Wednesday.

After opting to bat, Sri Lanka struggled despite Kumar Sangakkara (45) continuing his rich form. Lahiru Thirimanne scored 41. Tharindu Kaushal (0) and Dushmantha Chameera (0) were batting when rain interrrupted the play.

Spinners J.P. Duminy and Imran Tahir took three wickets apiece for South Africa.
