Indian Police Service officer Rajeev Kumar on Wednesday formally took over as the new police commissioner of the city, replacing Surajit Kar Purakayastha.
"Kolkata Police is one of the oldest and prestigious organisations of the country. I hope I will keep its flag flying high," said the 1989 batch officer after taking charge at a brief ceremony at the police headquarters here.
"We will need the cooperation of all sections of society so that we can serve better," said Kumar.
He was additional director general, CID, before being appointed the city police chief on Friday.
