The Congress on Wednesday said a Supreme Court-appointed commission has unearthed a scam pertaining to compensation given to oustees of Sardar Sarovar project in the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.
The Congress said the state government had approached the state High Court with a plea to stop the publication of the commission's report.
It said eventually after the Supreme Court orders, the report was placed in the assembly and an action taken report has since been demanded.
"A scam of monumental proportions has come to light due to findings of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice S.S. Jha Commission. After a seven-year investigation, the commission exposed rampant forgery of documents that allowed compensation to be paid to impostors," said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi here.
"The commission has also brought to the fore that the Madhya Pradesh government did not cooperate with its inquiry and made every attempt to prevent the damning report from being made public before it was finally tabled in the assembly in July-end," he said.
The commission allegedly recorded at least 2,000 fraudulent cases of at least 45,000 affected families.
The panel, Singhvi said, found forgery of documents in thousands of cases of oustees in the Narmada Sardar Sarovar Dam area, for whom huge amounts of relief and rehabilitation amount was released on the basis of forged documents.
