Sonia wishes speedy recovery to injured Mamata nephew

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday wished speedy recovery to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, who was seriously injured in a road accident in West Bengal.

Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, sustained serious injuries on Monday when his car hit a towing van at Ratanpur, about six km from Singur on Durgapur Expressway in Hooghly district.

"Sonia Gandhi has extended her good wishes for health and fast recovery to Abhishek Banerjee. Her thoughts and prayers are with Abhishek and the Banerjee family in these testing times," said an official statement.

Gandhi also expressed her happiness over Banerjee's condition being stable and his responding to the treatment.

Banerjee was rushed to a Kolkata nursing home where doctors said he had sustained an orbital injury in a facial bone below the eye.

Mamata Banerjee has ordered a Criminal Investigation Department probe to find out if there was some foul play.
