Police surveillance and security arrangements have been beefed up in the city ahead of the 71st Independence Day celebration on Tuesday, a senior Kolkata police official said.
According to police, special security arrangements have been made at crowded places and around vital installations including shopping malls, important railway stations and metro stations, government buildings and the port and the airport, besides the Indira Gandhi Sarani (erstwhile Red Road) in Central Kolkata, where the Independence Day programme organised by the West Bengal government would take place.
"Three thousand police personnel under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners of Kolkata police would be monitoring the city streets on Tuesday. Six watch towers haev been put up in an around the Red Road for surveillance. 14 drones would be monitoring the activities during the programme," said Joint Commissioner of Police(Headquarters) Supratim Sarkar.
He said there would be six Quick Response Team, 11 Heavy Radio Flying Squad (HRFS) and 10 ambulances positioned at the Red Road while 34 mobile vans guided by Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Kolkata police would be in the city to tackle any untoward incidents.
The entire Red Road would be divided into 14 zones for security purpose.
The movement of vehicles on the road would be stopped from 12 a.m. on Tuesday to afternoon," the officer added.
