Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday condoled the death of eminent molecular biologist Obaid Siddiqi, describing him as one among those who laid the foundation of scientific research in India.

"Siddiqi was among that crop of scientists who helped lay the foundation of our country's scientific research effort," the prime minister said in a statement.

"Siddiqi will be missed deeply by his friends and colleagues as a great researcher, educationist and a very warm human being," he added.

Siddiqi, 80, died in Bangalore Friday and his last rites were performed Saturday.
