South Korea and the US Thursday ended a joint military exercise a day earlier than scheduled.

The computer-assisted simulation exercise, called Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG), was wrapped up successfully, the Combined Forces Command (CFC) said in a press release.

The drill, launched Aug 18, ended a day earlier than scheduled in an apparent effort to calm North Korea.

Pyongyang is yet to respond to Seoul's proposal Aug 11 to hold senior-level talks about issues, including reunion of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

This year's exercise mobilised some 50,000 South Korean troops and 30,000 US forces, including 3,000 soldiers operating overseas and coming here for the drill.
