General Confederation of Labour (CGT) secretary general Hugo Moyano, one of the most powerful labour leaders in Argentina, has said he planned to step down and was interested in seeking the presidency of the Argentine Football Federation (AFA).

"I just finished my third consecutive term. You have to give the young people a bit of a chance to hold important posts," Moyano said in an interview with the C5N television network on Sunday, reports Efe.

"There's a group of clubs that are proposing me for the AFA (presidency), but I still have not decided. Anything can happen in life. It'd be interesting. There are several things that have to be corrected at the AFA, it should be representative and the clubs should have better financial conditions," the 72-year-old labour leader said.

Moyano, a former lawmaker from Buenos Aires province and president of the Atletico Independiente football club, is one of the most powerful labour leaders in Argentina and has fought for the rights of workers.

He has served as secretary-general of the CGT, a Peronist labour federation, since 2004 and could be a rival of television personality Marcelo Tinelli in the race for the AFA presidency.

The AFA election will be held in late June.
