Two extortionists arrested for making fake calls to police

Two persons were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department from West Bengal's Murshidabad district for making extortion calls in the name of a senior IPS officer, a senior official said on Friday.

Palash Mondal, inhabitant of Reginagar in Murshidabad district, allegedly made fake calls to sub-jailor of Tamluk sub-correctional home Biswaroop Singh, introducing himself as the state's Principal Secretary (prison) Shivaji Ghosh, and asked the officer to deposit money in a specific bank account.

According to police sources, Singh received the fake call on October 25, when he was asked to arrange money for a patient's treatment in south India.

Singh, already cautioned about such fake calls in the name of high ranking officials, lodged a police complaint.

"CID traced the fake call to Murshidabad and arrested the main accused Palash and his accomplice Manowar SK, the holder of the bank account given by Mondal," Deputy Inspector General of police (CID) Bharat Lal Meena said.

"Mondal has been forwarded to East Midnapore district court which remanded him to police custody for 14 days," he said.
