The Border Security Force (BSF) in a joint operation with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), on Thursday apprehended two people and seized 50 kg ganja (cannabis) from near the Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Nadia district, officials said.
The duo of Rajib Mandal and Shital Biswas was nabbed by the troopers of 39 Battalion BSF and NBC officials from under the Shikarpur border outpost area in the district.
"We have seized 50 kg of ganja and 7000 bottles Phensedyl (cough syrup) from the duo. They have been handed over to the NCB," said a BSF officer.
Laced with codeine-phosphate, Phensedyl is in huge demand in Bangladesh for its sedative properties.
The BSF so far in the year has seized over 485 kg of ganja and apprehended 6 smugglers in its South Bengal frontier zone.
