What led to the sudden transfer of Rajiv Takru is a question on everybody's mind. While the transfer of the Gujarat cadre officer did not come as a surprise to the bureaucracy, what shocked many was the transfer ahead of the Budget. There are different stories doing the rounds in the power corridors. One goes like this: Takru gave charge of a tax intelligence body to an additional secretary-level officer, when only a special secretary-level officer could be assigned that position. Another says the lobby of Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officers worked hard to ensure the "tough" Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer was out of finance. "If that's the case we are happy that the IRS lobby is so strong that it can get an IAS officer transferred," said a revenue officer in jest.
