Businessmen are generally said to be enamoured of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and keen to associate closely with him, but at least one of them clearly wants to be his own man. B K Modi, the flamboyant chairman of the $2-billion Spice Global, is commonly known as "Joint Venture" Modi for building his empire on the back of serial partnerships with multinationals. Asked about this nickname at a recent press conference, he retorted with a loud laugh, "It's better to be known as Global Modi than PM [prime minister] Modi. Being the first one you get to hoist many flags and with PM Modi you can hoist only one."
