The Narendra Modi government had marked the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, or JP, as he was known, on October 11 last year with much fanfare.

A function was held at Vigyan Bhavan where those who fought against the Emergency were honoured by senior ministers. "JP" is a hero in Bihar, and it wasn't incidental that Assembly elections were then due in that state.

This Tuesday was again the birth anniversary of "JP". However, this time celebrations by the government were low-key. It instead devoted time and energy to remember Jan Sangh leader and social worker Nanaji Deshmukh.
