When Anant Geete was renominated against NCP minister Sunil Tatkare in Raigad in the Lok Sabha polls, his detractors within Shiv Sena had predicted his defeat. A close confidant of Shiv Sena chief late Bal Thackeray and his son Uddhav, Geete prefers to keep a low profile and work for the party.
Geete comes from the Kunbi community. He was attacked by party veteran and former leader of opposition in the Assembly Ramdas Kadam for creating a rift between Kunbi and Maratha communities.
After his victory, Uddhav appointed him as the Shiv Sena group leader in the 16th Lok Sabha. Before elected for the first time to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996 polls,
Geete worked as the Shiv Sena corporator during 1985-1992 in India's richest civic body, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation. He also assumed the post of chairman of the powerful standing committee between 1990 and 1992. During the BJP-led NDA government, he replaced Suresh Prabhu as the union minister for power.
