General (retd) V K Singh won the Lok Sabha election with the second highest votes margin after Narendra Modi. Singh became the first army chief, who dragged the central government to the Supreme Court over a dispute over his age, but had to finally stand-down.

His actions had spooked fears of a “coup” among the highest echelons of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). He, however, enjoys image of an incorruptible officer.

Born in 1951, Singh became India’s first para-commando to head the Indian army. He has seen action during the 1971 Bangladesh war and the 1999 Kargil war. After retirement, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier this year.
