Centre mulling changes to laws

Labour laws needed to be changed and the Narendra Modi government was actively considering it, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Vishnu Deo Sai informed Parliament on Wednesday.

He told the Rajya Sabha the changes in laws, including the Minimum Wages Act, 1948; Labour Laws, 1988; Factories Act, 1948; and Child Labour Act, 1986 were under consideration.

But in his answer to a question if the government was thinking of formulating new labour laws "very soon", Sai said, "At present, there is no proposal to formulate new laws.

"The ministry has not received any formal and specific proposal from the Rajasthan government for the Factories Act, 1948; the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1977; and the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947."

The Rajasthan government has approved in its cabinet proposed changes to the three laws.

Many trade unions have protested the changes saying these were done without consulting them.
