Nobel Laureate Prof Werner Arber visits Amity University

It was a memorable day for the entire Amity fraternity when Nobel Laureate, Prof. Werner Arber visited Amity University and delivered a special lecture on March 11, 2011 at Sector-125 Campus. 

Prof. Werner Arber is a leading Microbiologist and Geneticist known for his path-breaking work in areas of Microbial Genetics, Horizontal Gene Transfer and Molecular Mechanisms of Microbial Evolution. In 1978, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for discovering the restriction endonucleases. With a distinguished career spanning 5 decades, he is known for his contribution across leading Centres of Excellence including the University of Geneva, University of Geneva, University of Berkeley, and International Council for Science. 

Atul Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University welcomed Prof. Werner Arber and his wife, Antonia Arber who accompanied him during the visit to Amity. 

Prof. Werner delivered a very interesting and informative lecture outlining how his sojourn into the mysteries of fundamental research started 60 years ago as a student; his initial familiarization with fundamental questions of physiology and genetics working on the microscope "Arthur" at the Biophysics Laboratory in the University of Geneva; his gradual advancement in research and Ph. D. on “Lambda-gal” and finally his acknowledgement as “Nobel Laureate” by the scientist fraternity worldover. 

Extending his gratitude to the great Scientist, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity thanked him for visiting Amity Campus and sharing his remarkable research and knowledge with the students and faculty members of Amity, who immensely enriched themselves with the lecture. Dr. Chauhan also announced Honorary Professorship for the Nobel Laureate in the area of Bioscience at Amity University. 

The lecture was followed by a glittering felicitation ceremony wherein Prof. Werner Arber was honored with a Citation and Amity Leadership Award for Excellence in Science by Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group, Mr. Aseem Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh and Maj. Gen K J Singh- Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh. 

Also present during the lecture were Prof. Sandeep Ghosh- IIT, Kharagpur; Mr. Varun Aggarwal- Director, Bhaktivedanta Institute and Senior officials, Directors and Members of Management from Amity including Dr. B Shukla- Pro V C (A) and DG, Amity School of Engineering and Technology; Prof. B. B. Dhar- Director, Research Coordination, Amity University; Prof. Dr. Sunil Saran- Sr. Vice Chairman, Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation (ASTIF); Prof. A.K. Srivastava, DG, Amity Institute of Biotechnology and Prof. Ajit Varma- DG, Amity Institute of Microbial Technology (AIMT). 

The Nobel Laureate, during his visit, also interacted with the budding scientists and future Noble Laureates from Amity International Schools, who very inquisitively, posed a volley of questions to Prof. Warner. Prof. Warner very patiently answered the queries of the young curious minds and complemented them for their irresistible urge to discover the nuances of Science.
