Nine ultras including Suren Debbarma and his son Hoku Debbarma have yesterday surrendered to Border Security Force (BSF) at Karbuk, a village near the Indo-Bangla international border and deposited one AK-47 rifle, one revolver and one grenade, the police said.
Debbarma had led an ambush on August 20 in 2002 at Hirapur in Gomati district in which 20 Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans were killed and their arms looted.
In a separate incident, two other insurgents of the same outfit surrendered to police at Anandahari-roaza-para, a remote tribal hamlet in Dhalai district yesterday and deposited one wireless set and cash Rs 700.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar recently visited many border outposts of BSF and alerted them so that the ultras could not sneak into Indian territory before the assembly elections due in February next.
He also appealed to the ultras to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream for protecting peace and harmony in the state.
