Nearly 150 people, including children were admitted to the various hospitals in Maval tehsil of Pune district for suspected food poisoning and police have arrested one person in this connection.
District health department said people fell ill after consuming sweets, distributed as 'prasad' during a religious function in Pachane village in the tehsil.
A 58-year-old man, who had provided the sweets for the religious function at the village was arrested, police said.
"We have arrested the person from whom the 'pedas' (sweets) were procured. A case under IPC sections of 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) was registered," an official of the Talegaon Dabhade police station said.
He said every year, the organising committee in the village procures the sweets from the same person and yesterday also the sweets were procured from him.
The district health department had said that samples of the sweets have been sent to laboratory for further investigation and Food and Drug Administration too is looking into the matter.
