Seventeen students of a local college, including six girls, were today arrested for allegedly trying to break open the gate and entering the premises of the institution.
Police said college authorities had closed the institution idefinitely about ten days ago following protests by students demanding that the Chikkiah Naicker College, an aided institution, be converted into a Government Arts College.
The College is now under the control of Joint Director of Collegiate Education.
Some DYFI activists are on a fast pressing the students' demand.
Police said some students assembled before the main gate this morning and tried to break open the lock by using stones.
