A man identified as Jalaluddin was going somewhere and stepped on the cover which got broken under his weight and he fell inside, Chachol SDPO Abhishek Majumder said.
Another person, Mohammad Alam, went down the tank to rescue him but he too did not come outside.
Fire brigade personnel later brought the two bodies up, Majumder said adding they died after inhaling poisonous gas inside the septic tank.
