Two youth have been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 30 lakh from a businessman by threatening to kidnap his son.
The two, identified as Ajeet (32) and Shivam (21), were apprehended by the police after they received a tip-off from an informer.
A senior police official said that the complainant Rajesh (name changed) had on June 22 lodged a complaint with them that on June 17 he received a phone call from an unknown caller who demanded Rs 30 lakh and threatened to kidnap his child if money is not paid".
"The caller also sent a threatening SMS. The complainant again received the extortion calls with a threat to face dire consequences if the matter is reported to the police. The caller was very well acquainted with the family background of the complainant," the official said.
Police arrested Ajeet yesterday evening, who claimed about Shivam's involvement.
"Interrogation of the arrested accused persons revealed that the entire conspiracy was hatched by the complainant's nephew Shivam who was assisted by Ajeet. It showed that Shivam was not satisfied with the weak financial condition of his father and required money for his family.
"He was working as a labour with Ajeet who worked as contractor in shoe factories functional in the area of Tri Nagar, Delhi," a police official said.
It said that Shivam was jealous of his uncle's financial progress.
During sustained interrogation, Shivam and Ajeet also disclosed their involvement in two more sensational cases of house robberies a few months back, the official said.
"In one of the two robberies, they had tied the hands and legs of a lady present in the house and committed the robbery at pistol point," the police added.
