2 killed over land dispute in Nagaland

Two persons, including a minor boy, have been killed in Tuensang district of Nagaland allegedly over a land dispute, a government official said here today.
The incident occurred at the Chendang saddle area yesterday where dispute over land has been reported since the past one month, the official said.
The latest flare up came when a mob attacked a policeman last afternoon in Tuensang town over the issue, the official said.
Nagaland Governor P B Acharya today expressed concern over the incident of violence in Tuensang district.
The Governor appealed to the people of the district to maintain peace and harmony among the tribes while urging NGOs, including student bodies, to help maintain peace and healthy atmosphere, which is essential for development.

He observed that violence is not the answer but dialogue should be held if there is any dispute.

He maintained that those responsible for violence and murder should be brought to book immediately to restore confidence in the minds of the affected people.
Meanwhile, the state Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the incident.
According to a government statement, the District Administration will take action for deposit of all arms and ammunition in the affected area and no public activity shall be permitted in the disputed area near Chendang saddle area.

The Director General of Police has been directed to constitute a new Special Investigation Team to probe the incidents that led to loss of life and property, the statement said.
Additional two companies of armed police forces have been rushed to Tuensang while central paramilitary forces were also asked to be on standby, it said.
