3 arrested for mobile phone snatching

Police have arrested three men involved in snatching mobile phones and selling these off after changing IMEI numbers, and recovered 84 devices from them.
The accused told police that they would change International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of the phones to avoid detection and ensure a handsome resale value, said Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara).
Following rise in incidents of mobile phone snatching on GT Road and near metro stations, a special picket was set up near Shyam Lal College to check two-wheelers.
Around 4.40 pm on February 12, a young man riding a motorcycle abruptly took a U-turn after seeing the barricades and tried to flee.

He was apprehended and was later identified as Furkan (23).
Later, two men, Juber (24) and Ziya-Ul-Haq (23), whom Furkan used to sell the phones to, were arrested, said the officer.
Five cases of mobile phone snatching have been solved with Furkan's arrest, she added.
"We have recovered 84 mobile phones that were snatched from different places. A laptop, a desktop and other formatting devices that they used to use to change IMEI numbers were also recovered. They used sell out these mobiles with new IMEI numbers," she said.
