Three youths from Tamil Nadu, all evading law, were arrested here for allegedly stealing bags from people in Connaught Place area, police said today.
Mari Muthu (31), Krishnan (28) and Subaramaniyam (31), all hailing from Trichy in Tamil Nadu, were apprehended from Connaught Place recently, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi said.
As many as seven cases of bag lifting have been worked out with their arrest. Other absconding persons have been identified on the basis of CCTV footage and efforts are being made to arrest them, he said.
A camera, two mobile phones, briefcases, clothings, pen drives and cash have been recovered allegedly from them.
The arrests came following investigations into a series of incidents of bag lifting from cars after distracting the attention of drivers by throwing currency notes near the car or by throwing oil on bonnets of vehicles in Connaught Place, Mandir Marg, Barakhamba Road and Paharganj.
"We had information that the gang from Trichy was behind all these incidents. The gang targets the cars parked near restaurants and eating places. At one time 3-4 of the gang members operate together," Tyagi said.
Muthu, who is declared a proclaimed offender in two cases, was the first to be arrested while he was fleeing allegedly after stealing a bag in Connaught Place G Block. His two associates were arrested later.
Krishnan and Subramaniyam were declared proclaimed offenders in one each case.
