The incident took place when the bus, in which over 30 students were returning from an examination centre after giving their secondary level exams at Jamaldaha in the district turned turtle near Jalpaiguri.
As locals started rescue operation, four students were found dead while 30 others had to be taken to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, Mekhliganj Hospital and Jamaldaha Hospital, police said.
Eyewitnesses said the death toll could be higher.
An attending doctor said condition of the injured were serious but most of them were in stable condition.
The students were on way to neighbouring Coochbehar district.
