The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorised structures raised over nullahs, lakes and drains in the city, has so far pulled down as many as 492 such constructions.
Under the drive, which started on September 26 under GHMC limits, multi-disciplinary demolition and enforcement squads, comprising officials of police, town planning, revenue have been carrying out demolition of illegal constructions, GHMC officials said.
Due to heavy rains last week, several residential localities and complexes in the city witnessed huge water logging apparently as water could not get drained due to the unauthorised constructions.
"As part of the drive today, 211 illegal constructions were removed, taking the total number of demolished structures to 492," GHMC officials said.
Hyderabad Mayor B Rammohan, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy personally supervised the demolition drive undertaken along a lake in Raidurgam area. Due to the illegal structures the roads in the area had got submerged in the recent incessant rains.
"We won't tolerate illegal constructions in the city," the Mayor said adding that people have expressed happiness over the GHMC's ongoing drive and asserted that there was no opposition.
During the special drive, unauthorised constructions with extra floors were also demolished, the officials said.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had last week said that the government will take steps to pull down 28,000 illegal constructions that have mushroomed over storm water drains in Hyderabad.
