The raid was launched after a militant attack left 11 policemen dead in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion in Sinai's Sheikh Zuwayed region yesterday, the source added.
The source said that the army has also arrested 11 suspects and destroyed 16 vehicles, 22 motorcycles and 35 houses and shelters belonging to terrorists.
The militant attacks targeting police and military has increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi last year. Many policemen and soldiers have been killed in the attacks.
The guards were killed during an exchange of fire with the unknown gunmen which led to an explosion at the checkpoint's ammunition storage.
